Top fork stanchions cone size in degrees [Resolved]

Forums

Hello,

Cant' find that anywhere and AN is afraid I'll begin doing some business against them if they gave it to me.

I measured 8°36'.

Could somebody confirm that please.

I can't measure angles to that accuracy so any reading I have would not tell you much. If you explained why you need this info then it may help.

The angle was not measured but calculated. If you have the small diameter, the big one and the length, it would give you the angle.

Sorry it's in french, but luckily algebra is international.

I don't really understand how the goal could give the right angle, but if you think it might help, here it is:

For my project, willing to keep the original lower and upper yokes, I need longer fork tube. I need to extend the fork tubes and to have the same cone at the end. To fit the top yoke. Hope it's clear enough.

Don't know if there is more difference other than length on the longer G15 stanchions compared to Commando stanchions. Anyhow worth checking.

Thank you Michael but like I'm not keeping the Commando sliders, just changing to longer stanchions won't really help.

I did the same calc as you but using measurements off the stanchion top not the top yoke and got

10 degrees and 28 secs so 10.5 degrees.

I just went to measure again both stanchions, in mm, and here is what I've got at 10° C in the shed. It came closer to what you had.

RH Big diameter mm 34,55 Small diameter mm 31,10 Lenght mm 19,07

LH Big diameter mm 34,55 Small diameter mm 31,16 Lenght mm 18,60

10° and 20 secs for the RH 10° and 25 secs for the LH

Small diameter is not easy to measure accurately and length is not the same on opposite sides of  stanchion but I believe that if we put 10.5° it would fit the top yoke and hold securely in place.

I tried measuring a top yoke and the figures were all over the place, thick powder coating did not help and measuring internal sizes is always more difficult than external ones as you say. As for the stanchion I measured, the depth of the taper was off to one side so I took the average.

I have been all through my books and records and can not find a single mention of this elusive taper angle. Now considering that the are several companies selling both replacement stanchions and yokes these surely must know the answer to this question.

Also, the NOC have all the Factory drawings so why is nobody from the Tech Team looking up the answer???

The following may answer Christian's question about the stanchion cone angle.

A Manx  Bike specialist, with the actual drawings of the top end of their stanchions, says that 10* is clearly shown in the Factory Blue prints. He also suggests that this angle is almost certainly going to be the same for all the bikes that used Roadholder type stanchions.

I had to laugh ...

Where do you get the idea we have ALL the factory drawings? We have roughly (working from memory) 1600 drawings. many of washers and bolts. How many drawings do you think would constitute ALL ?

I will have a look tonight when I get home from work and see if there are any stanchion drawings.

Lap it in....Someone's got to find a use for the coarse end of the grinding paste tin... :-)

I don't have any coarse grinding paste as it was sequestrated by a northerner as a bearing 'lubricant'!

What I was suggesting was that Richard might be bear baiting a particular east Yorkshire member who hasn't posted on this subject yet, but probably will soon and mention women, boats, manxmans etc.

Where is this intelligent line anyway? During my lifetime I've found there to be no geographical barriers to intelligence,  nor stupidity either when it comes to it.

Since you aslked, I am in Northampton, so whether that counts as north, south or middle I'll let you be the judge.

Fair enough and understood now especially after the suggestion of using grinding paste to lap in cam bushes!

I'm from Yorkshire myself originally, but have lived in Surrey for the last 40 years.

I was on another forum a while back, and a guy posting on there had as a strapline

"Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity"

Wholeheartedly concur......
