Oil rings 850

Forums

Hi all, daft question I’m sure but what should the oil ring gap be? It’s on standard bore, just been honed and is well within tolerances.

I can’t find what the gap should be in the manuals or on the internet.

These are new rings I’m fitting and are two piece (with the spring thing in the middle)

Thanks for any advice........Shaun.

Must admit I only checked the top and middle rings when I did mine in mid 80's, if I was doing it now then I would use the published ring gaps for the top/middle rings.

The Technical Data section of the 850-750 Commando Workshop Manual says: Top ring fitted gap: 0.010"-0.012" Middle ring (taper) fitted gap: 0.008"-0.012"

What I did find with the Hepolite rings back in 86 was a too long spring which stopped the piston going into the bore, so I did trim that but not the rails, despite warning of impending doom the bike does not smoke, uses little oil and has good compression to this day on these rings.
