More Navigator gearbox trouble

Forums

It´s gearbox trouble August, I guess seeing the threads in the Lightweight forum!

So I thought I,d join in!

I got my gearbox  oil tight-hopefully with new O-rings for the gear change shaft. Went out for a testride, could go up to fourth gear but was stuck in that- no more gears selectable.

So I opened up the gearbox once more to find the gear selector spring out of place.

Is there a right or a wrong way to fit it? Like in a Commando gearbox with the straight leg up? Should there be a slight gap between the spring legs and the ratchet selector?

Also the lid washer shows some wear- one side is rounded more than the other? Normal or scrap?

Hi Ulrich,

From memory the pawl spring outer washer is basically a dish shape with only two parts if the dish side remaining and the transition of one of the dish ends is radiused. If this what you call the lid washer.  If you have a parts book, Item 13 in the exploded gearbox drawing.

I suspect that only one of the gear selector tails is correctly located in the stop plate assembly. The other is not in the slot and so not tipping the pawl for downward gear changes.

As in a post elsewhere today. Drop out most of the gearbox oil and with an LED torch watch the pawl action through the gearbox inspection cover.

Easy to get the pawl spring not in the slots. A blind assembly.

Don't think it matters which way round the spring is. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Today I fitted the pawl spring ( new from NOC spares)several times. No matter how I bent the spring legs with more or less play for the pawl it all ended with no gear selection possible. The spring legs went out of the stop plate assembly when operating the mechanism. So I used the old spring which legs are slightly longer and success! I could shift through the gears. A test ride was not possible due to heavy rain. Let´s hope for the best!

Hi Uli, hopefully that’s fixed it, I’ve just sourced a pair of secondhand selector forks so should be back running again soon!

Just to add that I had a test ride yesterday and I have four gears on my Jubilee but it is vey difficult to select any but first gear with any certainty! I have bought a new selector spring and I will have another go at taking the gearbox apart and reassembling it and look for wear in other parts. At least my selector forks are good. Best of luck with yours Dan.

I’ve sourced a pair of S/H selector forks and a replacement 2nd gear which took the brunt of the abuse, am waiting for the seals and bearings + a few other bits and bobs to come from the club before I try and reassemble, oh and I have to ream the sleeve gear bushes before I fit the new one, which is what started this all off!
