Cylinder Barrel Temperature

Can anyone tell me what temperatures to expect for cast iron cylinder barrels when operating? 750 Combat motor .

Richard. I suggest you look up infra red temperature gun in Amazon. Less than £20. I used one on my 16H (obviously not the same as yours!), so i would guess about 180C. Might be totally wrong! The side valve motor showed 240C near the exhaust but only 160 on the opposite side.

Maplin used to sell them....sad times...

Thanks David - I should have qualified my question by stating I am choosing high temp paint for the cylinder barrels -The engine is completely torn down and barrels are nearly ready for paint . I am looking at engine enamels that are good to 600 F or so . I can’t imagine them exceeding that but like you I am uncertain.

..., are very useful and are available on ebay for less than a tenner. One use is for comparing exhaust temperatures on a twin to find a lazy cylinder, or on a 4 upwards for finding one that isn't firing.

The cheap one I have seems very accurate when compared with an old style thermometer.

Hi Richard,  if you are just looking for a suitable paint, for your barrels, why not visit a woodstove shop.    Black aerosol paints are available in matt, or satin, finish.  These will withstand  over 600c.

Thanks Gents for the replies . I have been told by none other than Jim  Comstock that the operating temps are in the area of 400 degrees F so well within the 600 degree range of the engine enamel paint I plan to use. BTW , he advises against the use of high temp exhaust header paint .

I use tremclad high heat engine paint on my Commando, it works great, holds its color, lasts to the next rebuild

Anyone recommend a suitable silver paint for the crankcases, the stuff i`ve just sprayed mine with is rather bright and garish so I`m looking for something with the original appearance ?

Call  Frost as they can supply a heat paint, made by VHT. They can supply, VHT Flame Proof coating in a spray can, in flat black, P462. They also sell different colours in this type of paint.
