Mk3 timing side seal, or is it

Forums

Putting a few miles on the Mk3 today after a total rebuild, 54 miles done now and on the whole good.  Things appear to be working in sync with each other to provide a fantastic ride so far. Only two things have come to light: brand new flasher unit packed up yesterday so put the old 44 yr old one back on, perfect.  Today though at the end of the journey I noticed oil dripping from the points cover and onto the exhaust pipe.  Engine cooler now so took the points cover off and yes oil inside the housing.  Cleaned up.  I wasn't totally convinced that it was coming from the seal in behind the rotor.  There was oil in the 'passage way' though that feeds the ignition cables into the housing (it could have splashed up of course).  I'm wondering if its possible, before I take the outer casing off, that oil could have found its way into the ignition cable passage and then dropped into the housing when it heated up.  I know there is a small contact breaker seal (06 6065) which I don't remember fitting on the rebuild, and that the crank and timing cases have a gasket to seperate them.  Lastly is there a points cover gasket, can't see one in any parts book?

Hi Mike,

Is the seal definitely in the right way round i.e with the garter spring facing to the inside of the timing enclosure and not the points housing?

Regards, Al.

Alan I took the cover off today and the seal was truly shot.  It was in the right way around.  I must have snagged it engaging it on the shaft.  Will try again with the correct tool
