RGM Norton front brake upgrade

Forums

Hi, I am thinking about upgrading the front brake on my 73 850 Roadster using the RGM  Lockheed racing caliper kit.

The problem is the caliper apparently fouls on the rear mudguard stay, l know you can turn the front wheel around and swap the forks over so the brake caliper is on the left hand side in front of the fork leg but is their any other solution to overcome this problem.

Regards Graham.

Graham - you should be able to source a new mudguard stay that is shorter on one side - this bolts directly to the caliper & not the fork leg - I have a twin disk setup and it has shorter legs on both sides that bolt to the calipers

Have you up-graded to a smaller master cylinder?

Better to do that before looking for a better caliper, unless yours is defective

On my '73 Mk1A 850 fitted the Norvil kit equivalent which is much the same as the RGM kit and also had the same isssue with the rear mudguard stay.

Remove stay from mudguard , shorten the caliper side with hacksaw (taking care not to cut it too short - if a bit long after offering up you can always cut off a bit more , but you can't add a bit later if cut too short !) , flatten the cut end of it in vice then drill a mounting hole for the relevant bolt on the caliper. Needed to bend the shortened stay a small amount so it would clear the caliper. Fitted perfectly.

Okay, sorry a little slow replying to your latest comments , I’ve decided to go with the improved master cylinder from Andover Norton first and see what improvement that makes. The only problem is that they are out of stock at the moment and not expected back in until July, so looks like l will just have to be patient.

I'm faced with this same issue - just fitted a Lockheed master cylinder and caliper yesterday to my '74 Interpol project bike. I've come to the same conclusion as above to cut down the RH stay and attach it to the RGM adaptor plate.

I also had to file off some metal on the inside of the RGM adaptor plate (RGM077) to enable the brake pads to fully cover the disc, as the caliper fouls the adaptor plate when the caliper is at its best position furthest forward in the slots. Hope that makes sense.

Original disc, photo attached .

I ended up not shortening the RH stay, just bending it in slightly and turning up a spacer at the fork mounting point.
