I would like to try and trace the history of the Mk 3 850 bike I have as far back as I can. From what I can gather factory records were sketchy or non existent. The bike was exported to USA in October/November 1974 then distributed it to wherever via Berliner I would imagine. Is there a DVLA/DVLC equivalent in the US that I could contact or do you think it would be a waste of time?

There is an off chance that the current owner of the bike belongs to one of the US Branchs of the NOC.
Have you checked with the NOC records officer to see if they have any record of it in the States?

Back then, Berliner were distributors for the East Coast, and NVC were distributors on the West Coast. If you have the USA registration document that came with the Commando when you bought it, you should be able to trace back the history of your bike. I managed to trace back the first owner, and where he bought it for my 1966 Norton N15CS. I was able to call him and ask him about the bike when he bought and also from new. The factory records only give the agents name, frame number, model, and some times the colour, and date of dispatch in the dispatch records. The USA pink slip or registration form should be great help in your search for the back history of your Mk3 Commando. This form gives the previous owner, the present owner, as well as his contact details after he had sold it on.

As far as I know each US state has a DMV and keeping old records is not something they bother much about with some states not recording any vehicle over 15 years old. So first you need to know which state Berliner shipped the bike to and then find any subsequent movements between the states. Dead end after dead end await.
