does anyone know if there should be a spacer between the brake plate and the fork slider, the manual and parts book does not mention that there is one, however i have a gap of approx 2 -3mm. think i should have one?

My 1963 has no spacer and the slider is close against the brake plate. There is a small gap between the dust cover at the other end and the fork leg with its pinch bolt.

The nut on the brake plate side pulls the shoulder near the left end of the spindle against the left inner bearing race - which then pulls against the spacer - which pulls against the right inner race - which is pressed against the brake plate - which is pressed against the slider. So there's no place for a gap.

My 1958 '99 also has a gap of approx 2mm between the brake plate and slider. I made a spacer out of aluminium and it is fine. Without it when I tightened everything up the wheel locked solid. I think my sliders may be Commando, not Dommi as they are oval rather than round section. Perhaps there may be a difference in slider dimension between the two? Of course, if your sliders are the round type it blows this theory out of the water!
