Atlas gearbox reconditioning?

Forums

Hi Folks

Just doing winter time engine checks in prep for next year. Looking to ensure primary drive and chain all in good condition ( bike is recent new acquisition ). I think my gearbox bushes may need replacement, not fully stripped down yet but there is perceptible movement in clutch fore and aft in primary drive, just wondered if anyone knows any good places in Midlands / Shropshire to get engineering work such as line reaming done for gearbox bushes ? Or I guess anywhere in UK if recommendations good ?

When i last did a Gearbox(dommy) it was just a case of soak in oil and drop in, no pressing or reaming. if the outer case bushes need doing ,perhaps a bit more work.

Norvil offer a reconditioning service but you will need a bank loan for a full job. £760 plus if I have read their blurb correctly. My advice would be to have a go yourself as it is a fairly straightforward job. Get hold of the NOC video by Mick Hemmings to help. It is also available as a printed version done in the 1980s.

I did 2 dommie and 2 Commando boxes last year. The bearings, bushes and seals cost me between £60 to £100 for each box depending on what replacements were needed. I did't really need any special tools for the rebuilds. There was no need to ream any of the new bushes. Any that were a little tight I eased using toothpaste as a grinding medium. It pays to remember/note how the bits come out so that they go back in the correct order. Taking photos as you work is a smart move.

The Atlas box does not really need the special layshaft bearing conversion that the Commando boxes require but I would suggest 2 of the RGM longer bushes for the outputsleevegear. Or use 3 of the short ones.

Hi Chris, Mick Hemmings has a shop in Northampton and can do the job for you or will supply the parts. He knows these gearboxes better than most and is very helpful, as someone has already said his video on gearbox rebuilds is excellent.

Cheers, John

I know we all love to hate Norvil, but their labour charge for a gearbox refurb is £150 + parts. Parts should cost around 120 for a rebuild kit assuming all the gears are in good condition.

does anyone in the Bristol area machine the gearbox outer cover so it will take the later 850 seals?

Just a word of caution-i rebuilt my AMC type gearbox with bushes etc.from RGM.The sleeve gear bushes were a really good fit, leaving the mainshaft able to turn nicely with no play, but these bushes (along with any bushes which do a lot of work) need a little clearance for oil to work it's way in.In my case the mainshaft started nipping up inside the bushes-Not Reccomended! And i had to do the job again, this time using Norvil parts, which left a little play-probably about 2-3 thou, and no more problems. So just make sureyou are left with some clearance and ream if necessary.

I don't understand people's love affair with RGM. Don't get me wrong, I've used them lots of times and will again, but they're not infallible. I recently ordered a mainstand spring from them, which when it arrived was wrong. I phoned, they argued it was correct, agreed to refund and suggested an alternative. The alternative was wrong too, and incidentally nothing like the first one they sent. I phoned, they argued with me again, then agreed to refund. They refused to refund the postage either way however, even though they had supplied an incorrect part on two occasions. So I was out of pocket by about twelve quid. I phoned Mick Hemmings, he sent me the correct spring next day. Should have phoned him in the first place. He is in fact the only supplier who has not let me down or ever sent an incorrect part. He also freely offers advice and you don't need to wait until 4.30 to speak to him.
