What colour should my 1959 Dominator 99 be?

Clive, if you contact the people in the link above, I feel certain they will inform you what colour you bike left the factory in.

I was unsure about my 1960 99, as it had a lot of blue bits on it when I got it but they were able to confirm that it was actually black and dove grey when new. Nearly finished now...

Had to be worth a try Clive, but if you don't like grey then you could choose anything available for your model and year. That way it would still be original.

Hello Clive your Norton colour is Export Metalsecent Blue , the Nearess Colour to this is Rolls Royce Le-mans Metalic Blue Silver Base coat, first, the Under coat should be Etching Undercoat Or zinc P182 .Isopol this bites into the metal, and give good rust proofing but you need more than one coat , up to four maybe needed,

Or you could go for the 'standard' black and silver, like mine was ex-works (a 1959 Dommie 99 'Special'). Anna won't like it as she reckons us blokes are boring and should gofor a proper colour! Mine had the optional chrome mudguards, h/c pistons and twin carbs for that year - hence John Hudson had it listed as a "99 Special" when he checked the recordsduring an extensive exchange of correspondence in 1965. I can swear by etchant primer - mine was done by a local blast & paint shop and it doesn't rust even after 8 years without a topcoat! Even though the old primary chaincase looks like a colander after grit-blasting! My engine/frame No. is P14 too and it's date is confirmed by the stamping at the lower front edge of the rear mudguard - "Jul 1959". This is not easily seen on painted guards but chrome is much thinner. I added a chrome primary case when I first rebuilt it as it went well with the tank panels and 'guards so I managed to find a chrome one to replace the old rusted (but restorable) chrome one. Dunno what I did with the original, original painted one in 1965! They were chromed as standard from 1960 onwards so mine wouldn't be strictly concours with a chrome one.

PS. Mine's a bit later than yours Clive- first registered 16th July 1959 according to the buff R.F.60 logbook. Serial No.is 83XXX.

Hello Loinel well old freind Black and Silver that maybe what you like and you can knock you selfs out with it, but Clive was asking what Colour his bike was as I came out of the ledgionary Bracebridge street workshop, and as you see I have anwsered this question , now go have some fun in the sun , happy riding yours anna j

Hello Lionel yes I do know your a Great guy and very knowledgeable on all things that came out of bracebridge street workshops like me your very passion is the Bracebridge street eara it would be nice if we all could set up a Regisiter just for this eara the Bracebridge Register Norton owners club .set with in the Norton owners club , what dose other think of this ,

Yes there was one on ebay not long since , it sold for £8,750 or something

HMG Paints of Collyhurst rings a bell. They supplied me with Post Office Red paint for my "99" back in the late 70's. I still have the remainder of the paint in a tin. Thestuff they supplied made an excellent match for the Post Office colour and remained in good order until a couple of years ago when I decided to do it again.

I have seen two of the metallic blue dominators recently , in fact a chap I know 3 miles away has one. If you are stuck with further info I can call and see him to see if he has an paint numbers.

Well have you tryed Nu-again Paint Bedford www.nu-againpaints.co.uk
