Serial number?

Just found a number hard stamped on the back of the crankcase: 99 4280. The 99 seems self explanatory but can anyone tell me what the 4280 represents.

That number that is stamped on the back of the crankcases under the barrel was called the Engine Shop Number in the factory's dispatch records.

It appears that the engine serial number is under that brass plate rivited to the left hand frony of the crankcase.

It looks like it starts with 18-

It seems that you will have to remove that plate to get at the complete number

Many thanks Mike. The engine number is fully visible, but not in the picture, and I have had the bike details certified by the club. It was just that I came across these other numbers and wondered what they were.

Not so I believe Mike. You should not have to remove the brass plate to reveal the engine number. The number should be ahead of it.

hello 18 is a wrong stamp mark it should be 14 unless someone in the passed has stamped it to make think its a 650 witch is not the case being a dynamo engine

Right.....everybody book up an eye test with SpecRobbers.

The number in front of the brass plate is a 15. Which means that this engine has most likely been fitted to a Model 77 bike at some point in time. Note the Dynamo hanging off the front end which means it is most unlikely to be a 650 (all stamped with 18 on the side and 650, 65C or 65 or something similar on the back). The 99 stamped on the back is another clue to this being a 600cc engine.

If Ron posts the first couple of digits from the actual engine number. Generally found on the left front hand side near the camshaft boss, then the model type and year could possibly be narrowed down.

However, I have a feeling that he just wanted to know that the number stamped on the back was the shop number. There are generally shop numbers also bashed into the respective crankcase halves. Anybody seen my glasses?

Spot on Philip. As I said, I have the full details of the bike and I just wondered what the additional marking was. Appreciate your input.
