Hi. a new boy so please give me some slack. Just got myself a 72 750 Commando and have sorted most of the initial issues but I have the infamous leak from the tacho drive. I have read it is common and more annoying than a problem but I would like to sort it.
Great site. Thanks Mark

If you know someone who has access to a lathe, the solution is quite simple. You need to source an oil seal with an inside diameter fitting the rev counter drive shaft, and then have the inside end of the fitting machined to take the outside of the oil seal. I did this on my 1969 model, and it hasn't leaked oil yet. Some of the parts vendors might offer a kit too. I have given you some slack, but please refrain from shouting in future.
Colin.
Whoops, thanks Colin In a previous life with another Brit bike on another site stupid questions were often answered with some sarcasum it seems not to be the case with Norton owners. Thanks for the help i do know a lathe with a man and as ive now run out of o-rings i will give it a go. Mark.

My drive boss is bored out to 16mm and I use a 7x16x7 NBR oil seal.
I've no idea if this is the 'preferred' solution - it pre-dates the internet and was the result of pub (or rally) talk.
Don't forget that the oil seal has to be fitted 'back to front' - with the garter towards the engine.

Hi Mark
you can get a lip seal for your tacho drive from any bearing supplier
Part No A406 , I got mine from ORBIC bearings in Croydon, 50p each
o/d 14mm x7mm bore x4mm wide and ten minutes on a lathe,
p.s the 14mm diameter has to be bored deeper than the 4mm width of the seal, say 6 or 7mm deep that way nothing interferes with the seal, and as mentioned earlier garter towards the engine,
good luck
STEVE

Many Thanks for your help, for ease Andover Norton have a uprated replacement at a very reasonable price so ive gone for the lazy option. Mark
