You may find the cost of hard chroming is as much as replacing them. I bought a pair for my dommi from RGM a couple of years ago, around seventy quid if I remember correctly.

Get new stanchions - chroming is unlikely to restore original dimensions and the fit is critical to avoid oil leakage. There won't be much difference in the cost anyway. Carl Rosner supplied me a couple of years ago to replacemine on a Mk 1A.

i agree with James. i fitted new and in most cases its cheaper, faster and easier.

There's half an argument for having them ground, hard chromed and reground. That way you can agree on a thickness of chromium.

It's fairly standard with any goods out there to apply just sufficient to get the item sold and out of the shop before it starts to drop off or wear through. Central heating radiator paint is a classic example.

I have to agree though, it's a lot easier just to buy new and fit.

I'd go for "genuine" ones, been sold some pretty rubbish ones in the past, the "chrome" on some of the cheaper ones doesn't look right and quickly wears. Cheapness isn't always best in this instance

Thanks for all replies . I will look at new ones . Maybe get the ones from the club shop . roy

I wouldn't buy new ones until I knew where they were manufactured. £36 for a pair from the club spares scheme is a good price, maybe too good. My swinging arm spindle from the club had a 6mm thread for the locating screw. It should be 1/4" UNF in other words. It's not the genuine thing. The old adage "you get what you pay for" I believe Velocette manufacture the stanchions for Andover Norton though I could be wrong. An email to the club spares manager might put your mind at rest. What would interest me would be the quality of steel used, the quality of the plating and accuracy of the threads. Vendors should have nothing to hide.

The Club does not buy from Andover Norton but sells pattern.

No, our stanchions are not made by Velocette. They are made from our seamless steel tubing- to original spec. Nobody else uses this steel for their "Norton" fork stanchions as it is expensive and has to be bought in big lots to get the correct grade. It is machined by machine shops only we use for this job, then ground and hard chromed.

Some of the aftermarket stanchions bend like copper tubing- the Chinese variety-, others are the wrong size and the bushes have to be modified to fit. As David says, you get what you pay for.

As i said in an earlier post buy genuine, buy cheap and you will be buying again soon IF they fit.

Not sure why the club insists on selling spares which are easily commercially available . Let the dealers sell the stuff that is commercially available (we need to keep the dealers in business or its all over) and the club can concentrate on getting parts made that are not commercially viable and which are unavailable.I'm really confused as to why the NOC is spending resources on competing with the spares sellers and manufacturers. However that is slightly off track so I may get deleted for this!

Stanchions supplied meby Carl Rosnera couple of years ago I understand were sourced from Andover Norton. They fitted perfectly and continue to providesmooth oiltight service.
