Leaking rocker feed

Forums

I was helping a friend with his Commando. I don't know much about Commandos and don't really understand them. They are like the bumblebee to me. This one has a black plastic tube running to the head from the timing cover. It leaks a lot where the tube meets the banjos. The tube turns very freely around the banjo fitting. Is the tube just pushed on or shrunk on? Can I fix it by cutting off the loose part and pushing the fresh cut pipe onto the banjo?

Have a go, you have nothing to loose, leave bango on head so you have something to push against. Plastic will have hardened so put your cut end in a cup of boiling water first the heat will soften it a little before pushing it on.

It will either solve your problem or crack as it may well be 30 years old, if it does they buy a new piece!

The rocker feed pipe on later engines carries oil at full (whatever your pump is capable of at least) pressure so be very careful about its repair.

Leaks will lower the pressure fed to the crank (it is often low to start with) which at best will increase wear or may even lead to bearing failure. Also the oil level will drop much faster than a leaking gasket or joint face.

Many owners replace thos pipe with a stainless type aftermarket item for peice of mind.

Now that I have thought about it, what are the chances I will make a good repair that hold oil pressure in? Probably slim. Why risk it? I'll tell him to order the good item.
