Hi I am trying to convert my Mk3 to right hand gear change I have fitted new inner and outer covers but every time i tighten outer case it fouls the kick-start return spring,so the kick-start won't return,i have built and rebuilt it about a dozen times any ideas please

Attached photos may help a little. As Paul says, the Mix & Match possibilities of AMC 1, 2 & 3 gearboxes for a Norton are almost countless. Throw in the odd AJS & Matchless box inners, outers and shafts and the fun really does begin.
The most likely cause of the strangled spring can be seen if you compare the kickstart shaft area. The AMC 2 box has more room for a chunkier spring and a peg for this spring end to hang off. The earlier box has a pin hole for the spring end. Sometimes the end jumps out of this hole and just rests on the shoulder.

Thanks Paul thats the problem I didn't realise the shafts had spring retaining holes in different places,problem now is if I buy another shaft how will I know if the hole is in the same place or not?Cant keep buying them in the hope one will have hole in a different place.

Yes you have it there when I fitted the different inner I drove out the ball bearing and put in a peg looks like I will have to find a shaft with hole slightly further from end.Or take some out of outer casing.

Hi Colin,
I was fortunate to have access to a number of shafts and was lucky enough to find one with the locating hole 5mm further along the shaft. I have no idea whether the cases and shafts came from Nortons, Matchless or wherever I just know it works. A pal did suggest having a second hole drilled but wasn't sure how difficult it would be on such hardened steel. Worth looking into. Good luck Paul.

I have converted to right hand gearchange and have a master cylinder solution. I use it with rearsets but have moved the foot pegs three times leaving the master cylinder in the same position. It could be used with standard foot peg position. If you send an email address I will send some photos. Could not load here.

I do not know if it is any help nut I used "Old Brits" Norton web site for their guides and found the gearbox guides very helpful. I have also changed my MK 3 to right hand gear change.

I too (at long last) am in the middle of changing my MK3 to right hand gear change rearsets, so I'd love to see your solution.
Some years ago another member kindly sent me a photograph of Pete Lovell's solution for the hydraulics side - it involved vertically mounting a cigar shaped japanese master cylinder to the back of the Z plate, actuated by the pedal shaft which ran through a keyhole milled in the to the Z plate. A small plate welded to the top rear face of the Z plate provided a mounting for the fluid resevoir.
I've tried attaching the photograph to this message but the file is too large, and has been rejected. So PM me and I'll forward you a copy.
