Accessory power plug

I'd like the plug to be available separately too, but I'm in no hurry â give Andover Norton a call, maybe?

RGM sell just the plug, part number 062666P the only thing they list the price as £18.90 which is exactly the same price as plug and socket part number 062666!

That seems wrong â but since it seems only recently to have been re-introduced maybe it's a question of demand and supply. I'd still expect a few quid off, though! Now I'm in even less of a hurry ...

Excuse me for being cynical but, unless you are determined to be commited to originality, paying circa £20.00 for something worth about 10p seems a little 'over the top' - a 'fag-lighter' socket or similar would appear to be better (and more practicle) bet ... .

Good point â although when I wanted to install a cigar lighter/USB sockets in my Triumph Herald a year or so ago, I found that 'accessory sockets' that mimic cigar lighters, while being fairly weather-proof, wouldn't power an actual cigar lighter, as they're too deep for the necessary contacts; and actual cigar lighters aren't at all weather-proof, from what I found. So yes, that kind of 'accessory socket' is much cheaper than the repro original item, and e.g. my timing light has a plug to fit that kind of socket, but I still wouldn't be able to use it to light a fag ... There's a selection for bikes on ebay, under a tenner. No time to check right now, but I have a memory that what appears to be an exactly similar part was fitted to Land Rovers and the like (unfortunately, the same memory suggests that pricing was also similar to RGM's).

Annoyingly, Skips picture shows the brand as RS, but a look on their site comes up empty...

If you held one of these plugs in your hand, you'd spot the difference immediately. The two pins vary slightly in thickness, thus preserving polarity (supposing it matters for the accessory, but it certainly would for battery charging): I make the thinner pin out to be 0.104" at the base (the pins are split and slightly spread at the top to help the plug stay in), the thicker one 0.116" and the gap between them 0.375" â so you can see they're quite tiddly compared to shaver plugs. Also I wouldn't take my readings alone as gospel, because my eyesight isn't what it was ... If anyone else comes up with similar figures, then fine, but if not then they might be more accurate!

I'm trying to find the diameter of the two pins to push into the socket. I've tried using my limited drill set to measure them and find the large one is 3.5mm and the smaller one is about 3.3mm.

Please could someone who has the actual male part measure the pins so that I can make a connector?

I've tried to measure the centre to centre distance of the pins but am wary of getting the vernier caliper too close to the exposed ends of the sockets, fearing that I will short it out! I reckon they are about 1/2" C/C.

The cigarette and accessory sockets, though looking the same are slightly different.

Oxford do a good range of leads sockets that can be left attached to the battery, one lead they do will connect to your charger via the industry standard connectors and also to the lead of the accessory socket. The leads and connectors are waterproof and long enough to come up to a tank bag when needed. When you don't need them tuck them next to the battery.

I'm new to the wonders of Commandoland but as I'm currently in the process of making a blanking plug for the power outlet I have measured the wider terminal (+ve) as 3.35mm and the smaller one as 2.87mm, The spacing seems to be 13.4mm, 17/32" in old money.

My older Nortons all have a fused Tamiya plug fly lead off the battery and sat nav, charger, tyre compressor, soldering iron, etc., all run off this. Doing the same now with the Commando outlet plug and thought I'd pick up a few spare plugs until I discovered the price ! A cheaper albeit cumbersome alternative might be to adapt some Wander / Banana plugs to fit the Commando socket. The widerhole takes a standard plug quite well (photo below) but the smaller one really requires the pin turning down a little to seat fully home. Shouldn't be a problem wth the old style solid split pin Wander Plugs.

Thanks for taking the measurements, they do seem smaller than the holes in my socket that I measured using drills. Perhaps the holes taper slightly so that the pins enter easily but then grip as they are inserted further.

Think I'll need to take the bike to my brother's place and get him to turn some rod down until they're a snug fit in the socket to find what fits best.

The VMCC sell Wassel stuff. They don't list that plug & socket but might be worth phoning them and asking if they could get them and at what cost.

I bought a few of the plugs from RS electrical suppliers years ago for not much. They stopped making them though.

And more. The small pin seems to be 2.5mm and the large pin 3mm and 12.5 centre of pins. I recently bought plug and socket from our Norton OC spares for £13 plus p&p vat.

A few extra facts. As the plug and socket have always been a 'standard' electrical part ie NOT specific to Nortons, they were available as such for many years but often they came in WHITE, not a recognised Norton part!! At one time considered as a caravan part.

Another point to be aware of, the plug has different size pins so that you do NOT put them in reverse polarity! Fine, except you can still TOUCH the pins to the socket, and if you are dealing with some fussy electronics on your extension plug, then you could easily have blown the very item you are trying to protect. Hmmm.
