I think my coil went pop earlier as it came lose and probably shorted out on the frame. Ordered a new battery too as its dead.
Back to the coils, I use a Boyer power box 12v system. So how do I know if the coils are non ballast?
I saw some lucas gold performance coils for a good price and said they are non ballast?
Thanks Paul
What kind of Boyer ignition?…
What kind of Boyer ignition?
It should be written on the ignition box.

Not a Boyer ignition
That picture is of a Boyer power box which replaces the rectifier and zener diode to control the battery charging. It has nothing to do with the ignition.

Ah OK thanks.
I'll get a couple of 12v coils then to replace the ones I have and a new battery.

I would ask Alan Osborn to clarify his wiring circuits for both coil applications to ensure a successful outcome.

IF
If this bike is original it will have an 18D2 distributor run on 6V with a single 6V ignition coil.
If for any reason it has twin coils (preferable 6V but maybe 12V) then it would be running a straight forward electronic ignition -ie modified 18D2 or even some magneto replacement housing with the Boyer or similar ignition inside. There is NO need whatsoever for any Ballast resistor or ballast type coils.

Thanks. It's 12v positive earth. I've read through the instructions and the diagrams show 2 6v coils but the general instructions say 6v with 1.5ohms ballast resistors in series or 12v (assuming without). So now I'm properly confused.

That Boyer Mk 3 ignition is…
That Boyer Mk 3 ignition is meant for two six volt coils wired in series, or one dual HT output twelve volt coil.
And no ballast resistors.

Is there a trigger mechanism in a housing that takes the place of the old distributor behind the cylinders?

Can I use the tri-spark 6v igc-1006 coils with my boyer mk3? Been reading that they have heavier wiring and oil cooling/better performance..
Thanks

They look suitable to be used as a pair in series. I haven't tried them.
Do you have Boyer instructions?

Is it OK to add a small blob of glue to the side of the coil to stop it from vibrating lose again?

The coil.....
The coil should have a mounting bracket, if this done up correctly then it will not come loose. I cannot see why you need special Trispark coils on such a basic machine? The crucial thing here is the Boyer MKIII, this works with very traditional 6V coils as fitted to Commandos and Triumphs, they come in a Lucas box (made in far East sold by the Wassel empire)

Added a new pair of 6v Lucas oil cooled coils and a new battery, and it's running brilliantly - best it ever has. Previously had a pair of unmatched 12v coils (!) and missed occasionally but now runs great.
Thanks for your help.

Oh dear the BOYER BRANSDEN system on a twin uses 2 off 6V coils preferable (but you can use 2 off 12V coils) The coils are connected in series. There is NO ballast resistors. The term 'coil pack' has no meaning for a Norton Twin..
