Any recommendation for the best crankcase jointing compound thesedays or the best way of keeping these engines as oiltight as possible (650SS) ?
It was always one of the Hermetite products when I was a lad - Gold, Red or Green - pick a colour!!
Have things moved on?
Hello again Len - I have always been a staunch believer in "Wellseal" that was a product from the AE conglomerate. It is still available and appears to be the same product even though AE are no more (sadly). A racing pal of mine swears by a product called Dirko HT made by a German company, Elring. It is silicone based but good up to +315 deg C. I have recently used it at his insistence and it appears to be very good. I've never been a fan of Hermatite products. cheers, Howard
Thanks Howard - Spec looks good and I greatly respect Elring-Klinger as an OEM gasket supplier to Ford and Aston Martin, etc so have ordered some Dirko HT from Carparts4less for £8.85 (free shipping). I'm sure it will be fab. Thanks again. Len
... at least as regards Wellseal. Lots of people suggest Japanese sealants such as threebond but Wellseal has never let me down.
Wellseal gets my VOTE.Anything that takes 3 weeks too come off your skin has to be good.
.. or nail varnish remover is the recommended stuff to get it off but I agree I spend a lot of time looking like a very heavy smoker. Cellulose thinners works quite well.
Many thanks for the info.
Another vote for Wellseal .
Wellseal is brill, it almost never sets so you can split joints without too much fuss. Don't breathe the fumes in too much as it contains per-chlorethane (like tri-chlorethane but worse), it's supposed to rot your brain or something (too late for me according to the wife), and the vapour tends to cling to your clothes. it's a good idea to wear some mechanics gloves to.
