rear sets

Forums

starting to get some confidence since gearbox issues and have been getting some miles in .Due to years riding modern stuff I am still experiencing difficulty with brake and gearlever use .

Does anybody have experience of the rearsets that use the gearlever reversed ? I think that these would at least change the gearshift to a modern 1 down and 3 up , or am I wrong?

This would also benefit my riding position as I have a Norvil style alloy tank fitted with single seat unit .

I would be grateful for any observations .

Thanks Roy

Hi Roy,

I made up some rearsets with reversed gearlever years ago for my first Commando as I had Triumphs before that and kept changing the wrong way, with embarrassing consequences! I utilised pillion pegs so they fold up, keeping the bike narrow when squeezed into my garage with all my other junk. The gearlever had to be bent out a bit to suit but I kept them for my next bike which I still have. A lot of people find the standard pegs are too far forward for them.

Before you go buying check out what kickstart lever you have as this can limit choice, I have the RGM folding one and had to pick carefully. I ended up copying the NYC rearsets.

good point , thanks John .

Its the Norvil reversed gear lever ones that I have been considering . I think I will need the angled lever .

cheers Roy

Yes, reversing the shift lever will make the shift pattern as you suggest.

No problem unless you are jumping back and forth from an older shift pattern to the new style.

I can't comment, far too old and sensible for rearsets, and anyway gave away a brand new shiney  set of Dunstall rearset controls 20 years ago!!!.

My other bikes are all left foot change . If I change the shift pattern I only need to remember which foot to use !

I am not looking to use clip-ons etc ,just thought that style of rear set option would be a tidy improvement .

thanks for replies

Hi,

May be too late as you seem to have cured your gearbox issues, but it is a shame that you didn't fit a reversed 'cam plate' into the gearbox while it was in bits. These swap the gearchange to the proper way round. Luddites are free to (and will) disagree with me, but down for up is only useful on circuit racers - you can't lift your toes in a full racing tuck. The rest of the world has had down for down, up for up since forever, and like you I don't want to make a simple mistake on our crowded roads.

Please be aware that you may find that using rearsets with the standard handlebars uncomfortable. Admittedly it wasn't a Commando, but I got real bad backache after 2 hours on a friends bike set up like this as your body is contorted into an unusual posture. (arms up, feet back).

Regards,

George.
