electronic ignition

Forums

hi  i am thinking of fitting electronic ign   i have seen a Boyer syatem for just under a £100 and also a Boyer Brandson for £125 also a Pazon at £130 what would you recommend please thanks

Boyer Bransden is cheap and cheerful. Pazon is a bit better made but costs more, and back up is from New Zealand. Boyer Bransden back up is from Kent.

I have not fitted either yet, but I am vearing towards the Pazon on my Velocette Venom, on the Pazon, long guarantee, not much price difference but as far as I read if the battery is not in top condition, i.e. a slightly low output, then the Boyer is more likely to advance, and cause a 'kick back'. A O is the one to advise you.

Regards John O

thanks for your reply   I take it you would go for the Pazon  rather than the Boyer then

 Cheers John

Fitted to my 69 Commando. They say it can work on reduced voltage. I like the pickup that has the wires moulded into the unit rather than soldered. Seems fine.

Had a Boyer on my 73 Commando and that started virtually 1st time every time. No idea why I sold it.

Following the blogs it sounds like the Tri Spark has a better advance curve but that is quite a lot dearer.

Ran boyer for 15 years on t120r no issues until failed after that time. Fitted wassells as like earlier reply liked the casing at business end. Absolutely no problems with this. Bike starts first or second kick. With dominator left points in situ and no issues as yet. Good luck with your choice. Hugh

hi Fitted a Tri spark on my 77` 850 Commando about 3 years ago...yes I Know it was very expensive but Not had a problem with it as it starts on the button or kick start even when batt is low. replaced the old Pazon as it let me down.

Has anyone here tried the Electrex kit? It's a Hall Effect system, hence on the lines of the old Lucas RITA system, iirc.

At £222 inc VAT it is not cheap, but this does include a new coil, HT leads and plug caps as well as the CDI unit and Hall rotor and stator.

I would suggest the Tri Spark system is the best option followed closely by Pazon. Both feature an anti-kickback system which really works and saves damaged ankles/feet. They also work well at low voltage. Reliability is good also.

Trispark and podtronics rect/reg do not mix well.

The Electrex kit is best avoided, the ignition only version works and gets good reviews by Trials Scrambler riders but as soon as charging is added the issues start.

I have an old Boyer Bransden on my 1967 650SS and it works great, no issues. I recently sold a 1960 Triumph 650 TR6C that I fitted a Thor Spark ignition system to. The appeal of the Thor Spark was price and it's pick up mechanism fitted inside the exsisting Lucas K2FC mag so the bike appeared stock, it used the exsisting auto advance system in the mag and gave no problems for 2500 miles.

With regards to low voltage I fitted both these bikes with a battery monitor that simply glows green when the alternator is charging while running, blinks green when there is sufficent battery voltage when not running, bling's amber when the voltage is low. Got them off of Ebay for £15, great bit of kit

Julian --Has anyone here tried the Electrex kit? It's a Hall Effect system, hence on the lines of the old Lucas RITA system, iirc. The Lucas RITA as fitted to our bikes was not HAll effect. The pickup system on the RITA is magnetic reluctance exactly the same as the Boyer and Pazon. This system incorporates the pickup advance curve. Hall effect does not have an advance curve.
