750 Head removal

Forums

Has anyone suggestions for how to hold the pushrods up in the cylinder head to enable removal of head from barrel please.

You sit astride the bike. You put your hands over the exhaust ports. You place your first and second fingers between the head and barrel as you raise the head fiddling the push rods up into the head till you can lean the head back with the trapped push-rods-easy.

Or as suggested in the technical section,  use a couple of cable ties to hold each pair together. Works well for me.

Dismantling is difficult as the rods are oily. A wipe with thinners helps and then two fingers on each pair. Once they're up a bit, roll the head backwards. The rods have to be off the rockers and up as far as they'll go.

If the bike is on the center stand and the center stand is connected to the engine cradle then it is pushing the power unit up into the frame through the isolastics and closing the gap slightly. As there is very little room to roll the head with the push rods in, I pack wood under the rear tyre so the center stand is only just touching the ground (did this yesterday on an 850, worked ok). Alternatively if you have some other way of holding the bike up without using the center stand or someone else to hold it for you.

Thanks all for advice, I managed it using rubber bands to hold the pushrods together and to  a cylinder head stud which held the rods up.
