Chaincase retaining nut 06.0367

Forums

I feel stupid asking this, since I've done the job enough times, but how tightly should this be done up?

It would be annoying if this senior moment led to my distorting the outer cover …

... is to tighten it to leave no more than a couple of threads showing. This does of course assume it isn't already distorted......

...please  disregard the above as I was thinking about the tin chainguard. My own senior moment!

For the Commando it comes up hard against the spacer so you can't really distort the case. You do have the spacer inside don't you?

Ian, thanks for that reassurance that the nut tightens against a positive stop — but isn't that provided by the tower cast as part of the inner chain case?

I think you may subconsciously be thinking of the spacer and shims behind the inner case (which certainly are present and correct.

Before tightening, do make sure that the stud into the engine plates that the chrome nut tightens onto has its locating nuts correctly set so as not to load the three bolts holding the inner case to the crankcase.

Stan's reminder is important, especially for those rebuilding from boxes of bits.

Fortunately my inner chaincase was correctly set up long ago.
