I am restoring a 1972 Combat basket case and after cleaning off the grime have come across the marking N817 on the gearbox.
Does anyone know what this means? Is it a Commando gearbox or something else?

Gearbox Cover
Gearbox cover is not threaded and looks like a Commando cover with the clutch cable entry in the correct position. Gearbox inner has the usual casting mark - 040122 - and looks ok, to me, for a Commando.

Casing cover..
It looks like you have the imprint of a feather bed centre stand spring on the main gearbox shell.

As Ian said imprint of a feather bed centre stand spring. Another check are the top and bottom mounting fixing the same width. Feather bed equal width top and bottom Commando 1/8 narrower than the bottom. The top has a 1/8 thick washer to make it the same width as the bottom this makes it easier to get it in the fixed gear box cradle of the Commando.

Gearbox Mounts
The top and bottom mount are the same, so looks like inner case is not from a Commando! I can only assume that an early owner had a gearbox failure and used this one as a replacement.
Does the N817 number indicate what model the case originated from? I can only hope that Commando internals were used.
Wont know till I take it apart!

The case could be off an early (post 1956) Dominator. Check the clutch cable hole and see if it is threaded. Commandos weren't normally.
Commando gearboxes are usually stamped with the engine number along the top mounting lug.
