I have a Commando stamped with engine #235377.
It is registered as 1973 but I see that last 1972 Commando was engine #230935 so I'm thinking it has been re-stamped with a number beyond the correct range.
It does have matching belly number 853 and wondering if this may provide some information on actual year of manufacture?
I did try to get a records search but that could not be completed with this engine number
Any thoughts on this?

235XXX is a recognised range of numbers, originally used only for short stroke 750's it ended up being used on both 750 and 850's. You may want to try Andover Norton, they have some factory records the club does not have. The 853 is just a way to keep jointly machined cases together, no date info at all.
What could give you a general date is this link

Compare your cases to the pics of how the cases changed over the years.
