Commando Fastback History XRA187L

Forums

Dear Members,

Can anyone shed any light on the history of a 1971 Commando I bought on eBay back in September, 18. According to the V5, it has had 5 former keepers and I'm hoping that a current member might have owned it at some time. It has obviously been well loved and has quite a few sensible mods, such as a cartridge filter, Boyer Mk3, Dunlop alloys, K and N filter, etc.

It's a bit oily rag with terrible black paintwork and I'm wondering why it it has been in storage, certainly since the historic registration came in, because I had to apply for it.

Any information would be most gratefully received. I've not been in touch with the DVLA for any other records yet. The frame number is 153026. The engine number does not match and is virtually illegible. I think it starts with a 20****, but I'll see if I can coax some more numbers out of the alloy somehow.

The crankcases with the raised block for the numbers look to be post-1972.  There is no breather on the end of the camshaft...Is there a steel plate behind the timing cover or is it cast ?

1972 engines began at 200000.

These are stronger cases but originally had the breather mounted low at the rear and it was problematical. Yours has had the breather moved to the 850 position but there are other mods which need to be done to oil pick-up etc. if they're to be run at high revs.

Dear Richard, sorry for the late reply. The breather is screwed into a flat casting where the magneto would have originally been on much earlier twins. The engine number is 210098 (I think). No word from anyone else, so I'll get a request off to DVLA. Engine number
