hi all,

i am in the process of tidying up the wiring on my 1972 750 commando amongst a few other things. By following my wiring I’ve seen five wires from the transistor box, two go to the stator, the red one is earth, the black to the minus on the coil. My fifth wire ie the white one goes to the L/H handlebar switch........ why? I assume it’s picking up power but according to the wiring diagram that I’ve picked off the net this should go to the ignition switch but it doesn’t say which terminal. My ignition switch has four terminals. Any clues?

Hi David,

White is 'switched live' so you just need to take it from whichever terminal has power on it with the ignition on.

You should have a brown / blue which is unswitched live (coming from the battery hopefully via a fuse), one terminal will go off to the headlights, one to the sidelights and the fourth will be the white off to ignition and everything else.

If you have a voltmeter, just check which terminal has power in all positions except OFF. That is the one you need.

thanks Tony,

it was as I suspected just somewhere to pick up power but I will change it to a likely terminal on the ignition switch as I am also changing the L/H switch gear as I find the up and down indicator switch a little confusing at times ( I have a number of bikes To excercise and that seems to be the odd one out as regards switching).
