Gearbox issue resolved

Forums

Some may remember my gearbox  was jammed on arrival @  the InCider Rally (which was very good btw!).

I recently pulled the gearbox cover & found a broken return spring. So I'm now wondering if I should pull the inner to check the gears & shafts as I'm half way there & it was last refreshed about 43k miles ago!

Next step is to replace the (notched) clutch centre & then refresh the swing arm which has a lot of play!

That's a very common place to snap. From the rust I would say change the oil more often and check the cover breather is not blocked.

I recently overhauled a 650SS gearbox with about the same mileage as yours. It worked well and no worrying noises. A little less rust than yours. My reason for doing it was that parts from the UK will be somewhere between 5% and 15% more costly for me after brexit. Enough of that. I found some small pitting on two gears, some wear at the corner of the dogs and some bushings a small bit worn. Parts cost about £407+VAT. Now confident that it will outlive me.

My guess is that if your gearbox works well, just use it as it is, if you don't are going on a grand tour. Only fit a magnetic drain plug, if you don't have it.

Hi Mikael, the actual mileage is something over 93k miles - gears & dogs were fine when checked at the last refresh - so are due a review! I'm no fan of Brexit, it just seems to bring more bureaucracy & increased costs all round (& this is just the start!).

I need to strip the primary to do the clutch centre (& replace gearbox sprocket), this all opens up more space for the swingarm & possible iso work. I'd be a real masochist to want to do this twice!

Robert, thanks for the comment, I'll check the breather & improve ny gearbox oil regime :-)

All needs to be tickety boo for Portugal next year, which will be a bit of a grand tour ;-)
