White lining

Forums

Hello Chaps, my Mk2A Interstate is running well but my only concern is its habit of twitching the rear end when I cross white lines etc. at speeds above 50mph. The tyres are Dunlop TT100 in good condition inflated to 26psi. I've tweaked the isolastics to the point that they are just tight enough to stop the vibes. The steering head bearings are good as is the swinging arm bearing. Any thoughts please?

I used TT100s for years and then on a trip to the USA rode a Commando that mostly ignored tar snakes and white lines. Shortly afterwards I ditched the Dunlops for what turned out to be Avon AM26 Roadriders.

Try upping the pressure to 30 or more. the low pressure figures in the manuals are well out of date for modern riding. TT100 used to white line particularly when the centre groove wore away but many modern tyres don't have this centre groove.

Switch tothe AM26 Roadriders, that will fix your problem, personallyI think it's a better tyre all round (if you'll excuse the pun).

I use 100/90's front & back, some prefer a 90/90 on the front - there's reams on this in the Access Norton List.

When I bought my MK2A in 1984 it had TT100's on it, they lasted 2 weeks due to white line following, dumped these tyres and went to Avon Roadriders and no white lining, its now on Road Riders and handles even better.

When I had the standard head steady and 19" TTs on my Commando it was a wobbly weaver.

I put a Dave Taylor head steady from RGM and Avon RoadRiders on the 19" inch rims, which totally transformed the bike.

It now handles and steers as well as any modern bike.

I agree, the new Avon's are tons better. I have them on most of my bikes but not yet on my Commando. My Commando is skittish by comparison, so I know what you mean, Mark! On the to do list!

Hi all - the size of the AM26 Avon tyres you are recommending appears to be 100/90 - is this a direct replacement for my existing 4.10 x 19 tyres - I assume the new sizes are metric equivalents - am I correct?

U.K. white lines are the tallest anywhere. The price to be paid for their good reflective qualities. TT100s are pretty notorious on white lines and Continental rain grooves.

I'm in complete agreement with Peter. Roadriders and a rose-joint head steady remove all this front-end nervousness and tracking.

100/90s are indeed the replacement for 4.10" and Avon have used the metric sizing since the second generation Roadrunners and Super Venoms. They recommend a 'WM4' (2.5") rim in conjunction with the 100/90 in order to achieve optimum profile but many owners are running them on the 1.85" WM2s without ill-effect.

Norton Villiers were more than a little cheapskate even at the time in supplying WM2s front and rear.

I use a 90/90 Roadrider on a front WM2 with a 100/90 on a WM3 (2.15") rear. These measure 94mm and 106mm fitted respectively. I run 27 / 30 or 29/32 psi depending upon loading.

I love the look of the Commando on TT100s but I'd never go back to them.

Hello Chaps, FYI following your advice, I've fitted a pair of Avon AM26 tyres and wow! the bike's transformed. I've just been for a 70 mile ride and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's like riding a different bike and handles like a Norton should. I got them for £58.00 each (inc. VAT) which I thought was quite good. I'm going to treat my BSA Rocket 3 to a similar upgrade (although it doesn't seem to suffer as badly as the Commando) - could this be due to the Isolastics?

Thanks for all your advice on this - I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise.
