Which wheel?

Forums

My 850 was made in 1974 with single disc on the left. I am going to Netley Marsh autojumble this week to search for a few things including a headlamp and front wheel. Can you help with;

x I might go twin discs eventually, will a wheel similar to that for the single disc also suit for twin discs?

x Can I move my single disc to the right?

x I have been looking for a stainless steel headlamp, does anyone know where bI can get one?

Many thanks Roger

Hi Roger,

Your hub for single disc is laced with one side of the spokes almost flat. Wheel builders tend to struggle with tension to pull the rim across towards the disc side. You need a different front wheel for twin disc.

You can swap the disc over to the RHS though the popular mod was to swap the earlier models round to put the disc on the left.

I've never heard of a stainless steel headlight shell being available but I could be wrong

Hi Roger.

Is your bike a Mk3? AFAIK, only the Mk3 had the disc on the left side (i.e. the left as you sit on the bike.)

If it is not an E/S bike, the disc should be on the right hand side of the bike. As has already been mentioned, the brake can be swopped to either side, by turning it the other way and swopping the fork legs over.

BUT, if the bike is non E/S (i.e. a Mk1 or Mk2A,) the wheel hub has a threaded ring securing the bearing on the opposite side to the disc. Wheel rotation will tend to tighten it, rather than loosen it and risk the bearing moving in the hub.

That being the case, a wheel built on this type of hub should NOT be fitted the other way round.

The Mk3 has a modified hub, where the bearing is fixed with a circlip so the wheel can rotate in either direction without risking a loose bearing.
