Twin Amals

Forums

Everyman to his own and we all do the modifications we see fit to our bikes, but I've got my twin mk1 Amals running perfectly. I like to keep my bike as original as possible so when the last pair were worn out at 30,000 miles I replaced them with another pair. This pair have done done over 20,000 miles. Last week I ultrasonic cleaned them then put solvents in the pilot airways, pocked the jets through with plastic guitar string, blew them out with an air line, spent some time get the slides to work together, set the air mixture up one cylinder at time, then backed the tickover screws down together. It now ticks over reliably at 800rpm, and comes off the tickover without the slightest hic cup.

As I've blown my own trumpet something will probably go wrong soon, but for now I'm really happy with it

Fuel consumption is in the low to mid 40s with normal riding, so I suppose a single carb would better that, and you wouldn't have the balancing chore which is time consuming.

Choises, choises.

Probably should have had the patience anddone the same as you withthe original pair of concentrics on my Mk1A 850 but in a fit of frustration at endless unreliable slow running bought a pair of the new Amal Premier Mk1 concentrics which transformed the bike - better starting , choke can be opened sooner , metronome tickover at 900 rpm and never stalls at the lights.

My original mk1 carbs on the low mileage (7k) 850 Commando which have been upgraded with new floats, jets etc. cleaned and the pilot jet chamber accessed for thorough cleaning run very well, giving mpg in the top 50s even two up and better still solo cruising at 60mph. The tickover is not as good as some i have seen and to be reliable needs setting to 950 rpm. The ignition system plays a part in tickover, mine is Rita electronic and seems reliable wet and dry.

Make sure the charging system and battery are in top condition regarding your Rita ignition.

Blimey, if you'd said hard riding I'd have said nothing but that's not good. If I keep mine at 75-80 on M way and make good use of acceleration mine is usually around 60 mpg, rising to 65 taken easier. That's a 750 with stupidly opened up ports which needs a bit of stirring and why I've just removed the PW3 cam. New casting 32mm Mk1's, needle in middle groove, 106 jet, No3 slides and 220 mains. With the PW3 the needle had to be in the top groove as it ran a bit rich at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle, visible black smoke out the pipes according to a following rider.

I agree my 1975 850,MK111with twin Amals and PW3 fitted usually gives 50-60mpg at speeds up to 75mph.
