Top half fairing for Slimline Commando

Forums

Hi All,

I am considering adding a classic top half race fairing to my 750 commando engine slimline featherbed Norton (caferacer) as a winter project. I've had a look at some listing on ebay, but would welcome advise on other retailers worth a look. The few listings i have looked at stipulate that they do not come with a fitting kit, so i would be interested in any advice, (photo's would be great) to give me a few ideas.

Thank you in advance

I have run a PR (production racer) fairing since 07 with clip-ons a rearsets etc. Tough on the wrists but beats fighting an 80 mph headwind sat up for an hour or two! Mine is an older restored fairing but I used a Mick Hemmings main bracket as he just happened to have had one made suitable for my Veglia instruments (most only fit the short Smiths clocks which have the mounting studs oriented differently). However it was a one off I was lucky to get from him.

So, depending on your instruments the offerings from Mick and Norvil could fit but there are differences. The one from Mick had a single 5/8" dia. tube supporting the headlight and lasted 600 miles! It needed a triangulation brace and has been fine since. Mick's single tube does allow a bit more steering lock which is severely reduced and makes U turns tricky. What you will also find is that the PR side mounts (downtube to fairing 'wings') are pretty crappy and fracture regularly until beefed up. Basically the flapping of the side 'wings' due to low frequency vibes breaks the side of the clamp attached to the bar connected to the fairing. Have a look at Norvil's site, that shows the brackets in fair detail. Of course if you are looking at bare 'Universal' fairings you are on your own but the PR method of attachment via headtube and downtubes works quite well. Let me know if you need any more info. I have a few pics of mine. Have a look here which shows mine over the years. I recently cut and shut the fairing to reduce the pronounced droop it had so the lower part of the sides (wings) is now more parallel to the top mount.http://s424.photobucket.com/user/keith1069/library/Commando%202007-2013?sort=6&page=1

Keith,

Many thanks for the detailed answer and photographs of the fairing arrangement on your own commando. This is exactly the sort of thing i have in mind. As you suggest i shall take a look at Norvil and Hemmings fairings for some guidance. I am not adverse to custom making the mounting brackets dependant on the fairing i end up with, i just wanting a starting place. As my bike is in cafe racer trim (no indicators), and wanting to make it a little more practical for the road the front indicator position on yours might be worth some further thought.

Thanks again Keith.

Kind regards

The same basic arrangement should work on the Featherbed (dumbo here realised you were not talking about a Commando until I hit 'Reply'.) Anyway I hope you can work something out. What I have seen this year is a lot of Featherbed specials wearing old Ducati fairings, 70's vintage I think. ATB.
