Tacho for 99 Dommie

Forums

Hi All,

OK, so I'm looking to fit a tacho to the Caffed Dommie as it doesn't have one but I'm not wanting to go down the route ofchanging the stock timing cover as I just don't like the look of the drive sticking out on other Dommies. So the question is are there any electrical ones suitable with a period look, am I asking the impossible of an analogue lookingelectrical clock?

TIA, Mark

Mark,

I have a Mick Hemmings electronic tachometer, but unless he has extended the range in the meantime, the face will not be correct for the period.

SRM have also brought out replica electronic tachos and now speedos as well. They offer grey and black faced versions and say that they intend to produce other ones as well in due course.

n.b. SRM no longer make these instruments. See the later postings below for details of the current manufacturer

As i wasn't too worried about my 650 mercury looking period I bought an electronic stainless unit from a bunch in the US. Clamps to the bars and runs off the boyer ignition

Bonjour Mark & All,

As Chris said, SRM are now providing an electronic tacho (choice of black or grey background) for our Dommies. I just bought one from them and installed it and i'm fully satisfied with it. It suits almost all types of bikes = positive or negative earth, 1 to 6 cylinders, electronic or "traditional" ignition system. Mine is for 12 volts and works with a Pazon Sure Fire ignition. You may need to check if it's OK for 6 volts if you are using 6 volts power.

The set-up procedure may be confusing at the beginning but works OK. Just make sure that the tacho is fed by a switched negative (if positive earth) power input (ie the tacho black wire being connected to the same connection as the one wich feeds your ignition system on the main switch).

It's costs about 160 £but is worht its price, compared to alternatives.

Here is my e-mail if you want more info on my experience : laurent.husquin@tnt.fr

Thanks for the reply Laurent, not sure which ignition system I'm going to use as yet but you say almostall types, does that include magneto? Mark

According to their leaflet, YES. It says "tachometer designed to be used with either electronic or contact breaker ignition", which is the case iwth a magneto. But you would have better giving them a ring to verify.

I am fairly sure it would not work with a magneto. Contact breaker ignition implies points, coil and distributor. Easy to fit the tacho lead to the low-tension side of the points. With a magneto, you are pretty much restricted to a mechanical drive - like wot I have got. Gordon.

Just re-discovered this old thread, I went with a Smiths (PUCA)Digital Chonometric in the end matched to a Gaggs re-conditioned Genuine Smiths Chronometric Speedo

I've just spoke to SRM and, as I and others thought, it wont work with magneto ignition.

Scitsu used to make one that would work with Magneto ignition, I had one on an R69S BMW, but it came in a big AV mount like the one on a Manx and it had to be independently charged up regularly. It was very good in use though and accurate.

AJS motorcycles were the distributor for them.

Hope this helps,

cheers,

Niall

This Commando owner in USA distributes these, but I can't seem to find them in the UK. but again I can't seem to find the exact product. May be I'll try mailing them but the usual suspects ( Norvil, Hemmings, RJM) don't seem to list them. Any ideas, please?

I bought my electronic Tachodirectfrom Puca who now own Smiths.

The black faced Chronometricversion can, if required operate the needle in the same way as the mechanical version.

These instruments have been developed by Puca as Neil says above, and Tom Kullen operates their Stateside distributor Smiths Gauges USA as noted by David.

Very happy with the PUCA digital tacho, I've since replaced the digital speedo for a genuine chronometric though.
