Can any the more technically minded members think of a solution to my speedo problem? I have fitted 18 inch mag wheels and front wheel speedo drive from what i believe to be a xs500 yamaha to my mk3 commando. There isnt enough room to fit the original mk3 rear wheel speedo drive. The speedo was reading wildly optomistic, almost double the actual speed by my estimation,i fitted kph-mph adapter which helped, but still estimate speedo is reading 20mph over actual speed. Can speedo internals be altered?Would welcome any suggestions.Regards Paul.
Paul. it could be a gearin…

Is the current clock a Smiths or a Veglia, the Smiths can be recalibrated by taking the inards out and then adjusting the screw underneath.

The rather more expensive solution is one of the new electronic speedos supplied by Andover Norton or at Puca
I have the speedo and tacho and they look good and can be tweaked to whatever you want.

Whilst this doesn't fix your snag, If you download an app called "android speedo" to a smart phone, it will give you accurate GPS speeds, heading etc.It can even be configured to give you an inverse reflected reading to give you a head up display on the inside of your windscreen. It's a free download as well, ideal for calibrating your speedo.

Hi Paul, if you only want to know your correct speed and leave your other speedo on, a push bike speedo works perfectly well and only costs a couple of quid, I have been using one for twenty years on my commando, very accurate, and only takes up a little space on the bars. Just remember to enter the correct wheel cicumference when you set it up.

it could be a gearing problem in cable drive to which I can offer no solution, you will have to work out the ratios.
on my standard Commando the speedo started to over read- sometimes the needle would go off the numbers up to the stop pin. I took the speedo apart and found that grease from the cable had travelled up into the speedo and found its way between the spinning magnets and the cup they spin in, so that the cup span as fast as the magnets, overwhelming the needle spring.
I cleaned off the grease, reassembled the speedo and it worked ok.
i don't think there is any way to adjust things in the speedo head, but I am not an expert
Hi Peter,
Speedo was functioning correcctly with standard set up [19 inch wheels and standard rear wheel speedo drive ].Wheels are now 18 inch with yamaha front wheel speedo drive ,smaller wheels would affect speedo reading but i have no idea by what amount.

Thanks to all members who made suggestions regarding my speedo issue, the simplest option would be to use cycle speedo as suggested by Les.The only drawback appears to be the recorded mileage on the speedo is going to be greater than it actually is if i leave speedo drive connected at same time.I have owned bike since 1979 when it had 2000 mls on the clock and would like to keep the true recorded mileage .Might be better to go back to standard set up with 19 inch wheels.

i don't think there is any way to adjust things in the speedo head, but I am not an expert on mine i drilled a hole in the bottom of the speedo so i could access the adjustment screw then i strapped a satnav on the handlebars and simply went out riding with a screwdriver and adjusted the speedo until it exactly matched the satnav it really is easy i adjusted the clock by about 15mph from memory hope this helps regards nick

I think the easiest solution would be to fit the speedo from the XS500 all the parts would match then.
