Sooty spark plugs

Forums

Hi - I've got a single carb conversion (Amal Mk1) for my Mk2 commando and am generally quite happy with it. Saves all the bruised knuckles trying to adjust twin carbs.

My latest problem is foxing me..... to get the bike to idle smoothly I have to turn the mixture screw in to less than 1 turn from fully closed and then of course its idling very rich with sooty plugs. Making the mixture any leaner means it misses on idle

Any suggestions? - John

Sounds like exactly the same problem I had. Turned out to be a few dud ignition bits which i tried to compensate by too much mixture and got sooty plugs.

OK - problem solved! I took the carb off and the main jet was within a couple of threads of falling into the bottom of the float bowl. Not sure whether I should feel silly or not - it's been sitting there quite happily for some years and several thousand miles. It obviously decided it was time to make a move.

Thanks to all those who gave it some thought - John
