SLS brake wear

Forums

My sons complained that my brakes were poor when they rode my 99 in the IOM, so i have checked them over and fitted an extended hub lever. Its clear that the leading shoe is wearing faster than the trailing shoe.Apart from constantly re-centralising and fettling what do other members do?, Is it practical to swap the shoes over, or fit a packing shim to the end of the leading shoe?.The linings were turned to fit and the milage has not been much.I'll give an assesment of the new 1" longer arm in the next few days.

I would be very surprised if fitting a longer lever alone made any improvement. A longer lever on the hub, to be effective, would require greater movement at the handlebar lever. There is a considerable amount of information, on this site, about improving the sls brake.

I tend to agree with you John, I will try the brake today, I did however find something interesting. With the brake adjusted too close there is (as usual) an intermittent rub when spun. If I put a light pressure on the end of the cam spindle the rub stops, indicating a slight distorsion of the brake plate.I had a similar thing on a Ducati and a packing between the fork leg and plate allowed a much closer adjustment. The distorsion on the Norton is in the opposite direction and will need a different solution. After reading previous posts i'm of the opinion that swapping over the shoes regularly is the simple solution followed by packing the shoe end.

There are brake plate stiffening kits available, so this is a known problem, but they may only be for tls versions.

Hi Ian, Stiffenning kits are not availiable for this brake. Took it for a ride today,As I have changed several things its hard to evaluate any benefits.Don't think switching the shoes (which had been machined to fit) was a good idea as the brake is now spungey . I'm going to get the axle hole enlarged a bit more to allow better centralization.Don't really need better stopping till I have got reliable going!, ---not there yet.-May have to resort to another make of old bike.
