Side stand

Forums

Soon after heading off today an unnerving noise was heard from the bike..

Luckily it turned out to be my side stand dangling along the road (I cable tie the end up as use the centre stand all the time) so luckily it was not half a mile back up the road.

What I can't figure out is... Is there only a tiny 20p circlip holding the side stand onto the shaft welded on the frame???

I can understand angles and forces but seems a minimal design for a 190kg bike?

i would change the side stand to the later design , you will need to weld new lug to the frame . if circlip gives up and spring pull side stand out while going round a bend you could have a bad accident. i believe it has been noted as bit of a death trap design, so i would change asap. i changed mine a 71 commando, most suppliers keep complete kits and show where lug needs welding. or contact me i will see if i can find details for you.. good luck and safe riding. neil

I recently was told that in order to weld in the gusset for the later stand on my 71 Commando I would need to remove the engine. Is this necessary?

Thanks for the replies.

Ive not got access to a welder, so instead drilled a 3mm hole through middle of the sidestand shaft (where circlip goes) and put a split pin through.

Now the buggers not going to fall off! .. and I can still use a circlip should I ever (NOT) want to again.

However, the problem ive found is... ive a 71 model and the sidestand has no extra tags to be able to locate with the foot, and it tucks right under the exhaust.. hence its almost unusable to locate and use.
