I have bought some Miller's 20/50 semi synthetic engine oil for my commando and alsoDommie99 once run in.
However, talking to someone the other day I was told that the synthetic part would destroy the oil seals. Is this true?

According to the technical sheet on this oil,the API specification claimed by Miller is SJ. This means that it will have been tested for compatability with a wide range of the elastomers used for seals in engines.
Therefore forget the information given you your friend/aquaintance.

Not as far as I know, I've been using it since I got my '71 Commandoin 2009 I use the Silkolene version.
