Road tax confusion

Forums

appologise if this has been asked before, but i couldn't find anything to answer this with the search button

my 1974 commando is currently sorned. in previous years i have paid for the road tax, but am i now right in thinking i amelligable for historic vehicle free road tax on this age of bike. if so how do i go about it, is it a simple matter of going to the post office as normal with my V5 and they will sort it, thanks

Depends on what the V5 has for first registered date and/or date of manufacture. My 74 was manufactured 11/73 but there was no mention of that on the V5, first registration was May 74 so I needed a dating cert to gain historic status as May is too late, they will accept Jan 74 as manufactured in 73. In April this year this moves on an extra year so a few weeks should see you ok.

For querise regarding exact dates etc for Vehicle Excise Duty the goverment website is truly your friend.

Ther it tells you that Historic Tax is applicable foe vehicles MADE before1st January 1974.

However in order for this to work the vehicle has to be shown on the V5C a being in the Historic Vehicle class. The Post Office can do this for you but not until your bike "comes of age" as it were. So if your bike was made in December 1974 then you have another 9 months to wait. If you pay to tax it before its birthday then when you change the V5C you will get a refund of all complete months VED not used.

You will have to get it MOT'd and insured first though.

Hi Guys, further to this subject I rang DVLA only this last week. Spoke to a Welsh lady who was incredibly helpful, she took the bikes details and confirmed its date of first registration as July 74 and told me that if I take the V5C down to the post office on April the first (tax runs out on 31st March) and write in the change of taxation class from "bicycle" to "historic" then, assuming the MOT and insuranceis current, the post office should give me the tax and send the V5C off to Swansea on my behalf. She said I should receive a new V5C showing the tax change to "historic" within 4 or 5 weeks.Very simple! I just hope it goes as smoothly as she made out.

Cheers Big Alan Clarke, Shenstone Branch sec.

My Mk 1A 850 left the factory 9/73 as stamped on the VIN but was not registered till 1/74 as shown on the V5. An added complication was the frame number on V5 had been wrongly entered from the beginningwith the engine number (with the same number alsofor the engine number).

To get the Historic class sorted I got a dating letter from NOC , sending this plus the V5 with frame number changed to correct one as stamped on the steering head off to DVLA Swansea. They came back within two weeks to say they needed a photo or rubbing of the frame number in order to complete the Historic class change - should haveincluded this in the first place anyway. After that all OK. DVLA Swansea extremely helpful and so long as your docs are in order you should have no problem.

got bike mot'd on friday and swiftly went to post office. was told the bike was eligable for historic tax but they were unable to issue it until the status of bike was changed to historic vehicle. had to fill in a V10 form and send all documents (V5, mot and insurance) to DVLA. copied them all first. will see how long this takes then. could pay for tax then get a refund on unused months but will wait till may first.

Strange, I just done exactly the same with my 74 Roadster but didn't have to fill in any forms or show any other documents, just write 'Historic' in the appropriate changes section on the V5c, (well, actually the nice lady in the post office wrote it in for me,) and gave that part to said nice lady, and voila, she was able to issue me with a receipt showing the bike was now taxed at Nill rate. Should get a new V5c with correct updated taxation class in due course.

I think you can do it either direct with DVLA or at the Post Office. I have just changed my 1974 Mk2a to Historic and got the tax disk and updated V5 directfrom DVLA. This is what the DVALwebsite says to do but I rang up to see where it had got to after about 3 weeks and the ladyat the call centre said that I could have taken it to the post office and they would have done it from there.

By the way........ mine was registered in June 1974 but because of the rolling 40 year change, this now qualifies as Historic. The website did not show this when i was going through the process but as I say I have it all sorted now.

oh well, sounds like the post office i went to didn't know what they were doing. wished i had gone elsewhere now, but V5 has gone so can't do nothing but wait. hopefully will be back for may as that is when i have some free time to ride the bike.

moral of the story is DON'T RUSH !!!

I have a 1974 mk11a but the v5c says first registered as Jan 2010. This was when it was rebuilt and had an age related registration number given. Previously it had no log book, it being a wreck.

How do i get the date on the v5c changed.

Thanks

Chris, as you have an age related registration it should state in section 3 of the V5c (front page) 'Was registered and/or used. Declared manufactured 1974' If this is the case, you should be able to go to your post office & do everything there. This was exactly the case with my other Commando which qualified for it's free VED last year, it was built & first registered with an age related reg in 2009, but was manufactured in 1973. It was exactly the same process as it would have been if the bike had been registered in 1973. If your post office say they can't do it, ask them to try as it seems several people have been told their PO can't do this change, but if they've been persuaded to try, they find that actually they can. If your V5c doesn't have the 'Declared manufactured 1974' then you will have to apply to DVLA to have this change added, which I think will need a dating letter or similar from the club. Try phoning DVLA, they are very helpful & will explain everything to you & if necessary, send you any forms etc that you may need.

just checked this evening on the GOV.UK website (check if a vehicle is taxed option) and the bike status is now taxed until april 2016 with a zero fee. so i am obviously assuming all is now legal to ride it. still waiting for V5 to return though !!!! (have taken a print of status page just in case i get stopped)

For those like me who are waiting for Commando historic status next year, just remember that the rolling 25 years was taken away by Wee Gordon Brown in 1997. Lets hope the 40 years won't be put on hold.
