Replacement VIN plate

Forums

I own a 750 commando that was registered in april 1973, was told if i can prove the bike was produced in 1972 i will get historic tax on it. Only problem is it has no VIN plate i bought the bike of a reliable chap, it seems to me that the VIN plate was misplaced after the frame has been painted. How do i get a replacement VIN plate? and is it true that if i can prove the bike was produced in 1972 is the bike tax exempt? cheers Joe

Google "historic vehicle tax" and you will see that the DVLA work on when the machine was registered irrespective of when it was built. The cut off for tax exemption is 1st Jan 1973

I've seen the red Vin plate and log book of a pre 73 bike for sale on ebay before now. The latest adds for road tax evasion show the vehicle being crushed. That would be sad, just to save a few quid.

If you do manage to prove manufacture in '62 it's worth doingbattle with DVLAon the basis of pre-1st Jan 1973 manufacture , which is supposed to be theactual criteria for the historic vehicle tax qualifiaction. I've got a '62 manufacture BSA Rocket Gold Starwhich went straight to BSA Inc.in theStates from the factory ,without UK registration ,and where it spent the nextforty odd years after which it was brought back to UK , rebuilt andUK registered in 2005. It qualified for historic vehicle tax excemption on the basisof proven manufacture in '62.

... of course I mean if your bike can be proved '72 manufacture ...

Those VIN plates seem to be available. You could try Norvil in England, or British Cycle Supply in the US/Canada.

Of course, falsifying a VIN plate could land you in a whole lot of legal trouble...

regarding, historic tax have been on the net and found out that if you can prove the bike was produced pre 73 with documentation, you take this documentation to your local DVLA office along with the v5 and they will sort it out for you there and then

Absolutely. Having gone through this myselfI found DVLA were very helpful and will honour your historic vehicle tax status so long as you can prove pre1/1/73manufacture withacceptable documentation. Acceptance of documentation is ultimately up to them of course but theywill acceptfactory records and / or engine - frame numbersverified by a recognisedorganisation - in my case it was an originalsigned letter from theBSA Gold Star Club confirming engine and frame numbers matching my machineat the factory and giving despatch datefrom factory.

I have a Combat made in 72 but not registered until 74, using the NOC dating service confirming the build date was in 72 it has Historic Vehicle Registration and a new VIN plate stamped to match theoriginal one which matched thefactory records.
