Re-spray costs??£££££???

HelloDoes anyone have any recent experience relating to respraying costs?A friend has recommended a company to me to do my Domi but they are estimating the job at around £1000!It is the polychromatic grey and dove white scheme and all the parts have already been sand blasted back to bare metal. They are specifying an epoxy etch primer ,2k primer, solvent base coat and a high solids 2k clear coat and seem to think its about a weeks labour.I have already sourced the grey and white paint.Granted there are a heck of a lot of little bits and pieces to paint and the tank hasn't been prepared at all, but I want to be sure I'm not being shafted on the price before I commit.I would be grateful for any relevant feedback. Many thanks ,Jason.

Given that it cost me £250 to have my ES2's petrol tank painted (just silver - no pin stripes)and laquered, a £1000 for a complete bike is not bad - providing they do a good job. I had my ES2 powder coated by Triple S and the 'guards, tanks, battery box and headlight painted black and I think it came to ~£1100 nearly 7 years ago.

Regards,

Ian.

Maybe you should get the job done soon. Anna might be the only one left with a paint shop. After 2016 and before 2019 all businesses must be carbon zero. Ever seen a paint shop without ventilation?

Mind you, you could sendyour partsto another country!

PS: Had a Dommie tank sprayed MG Solar red for £100 but I did the prep myself. Powder coating the black bits works out much cheaper and gives a smooth hard finish.

Hi Jason,

I paint cars & bikes for a living & would suggest that the materials cost for a two tone clear over base complete respray on a Dommi would be in the region of £300. Don't forget it's not just the paint, there are fillers, abrasives, solvents, cleaning materials, masking materials, polishing materials, heating, enviromental charges for disposal of waste & a whole host of other sundries & overheads that all have to be paid for. What value you put on a profesionals time & knowledge only you can decide but if you take the £300 off your quoted £1000 & base a week as 40 hours it only works out at £17.50 an hour, & I would say that's not unreasonable.

Hope this helps ith your decision,

Regards, Tim

It's the lots of little pieces that up, they may need to be preped and then dressed between coats by hand which costs, add in the comments from others and it does not seem bad. If it includes VAT then the price seems reasonable.

Hello Well said Tim Now I wish you Norton owners would just take some time out and think and do your research before you do a restoration job and try and get the colour of your machine right, yes I do know what your all going to say, Black is Not Black as there 50 shades of Black . and not all Norton's were black and silver there were red one green ones blue ones in different sades all with dove grey , Now as for Polychromatic grey and Norton Metallic Grey there are Two Polychromatic Grey's the early one and late one there very different the early one as gold pigment in it, the later one as not have gold pigment is it. its more silver grey then Norton Grey takes over from this, as for the blue's the early light Polychromatic Blue As seen on 1952 to 54 export machines also there was post office red too the same years then late 1950s you get a other blue, Metelsecne Blue that a Mid Metallic Blue, The nearest I have to this colour is LE_mans Blue A Rolls Royce Colour . as for the Norton Manxman Colour Blue The dead on match I have is Lotus Pacific blue ,but you need a gold base coat first before the blue. and thin coats of lacquer I use a Anti- Ethanol Lacquer You can get this its more expensive than the normal lacquer but it works. good, And just think of this if your machine has the right Colour then you can add to the price . when you come to sell your motorcycle, its counts as it cost nearly £2k to get a good paint job done in our days. and the prices are only going to go up ward. So now its time to think about your restoration job .and not just do a machine for a run around bikes. just because its easier to do. or we will make it in too a cafe racer. Doing this only makes for Standard machines too get very Rare And very hard to find. and the right tin ware to we all need to enjoy our machine but just have a heart before you dis-side how you going to do your rebuild, there is enough lash up out there all ready. yours Anna J

I agree with much of what has been said, thank goodness we don't have 50 shades of dove grey! Where not stainless I have had most of my gloss black powder coated, this includes the 1960 99 currently under restoration.

However, once Fred W has supplied me with a front mudguard I'll be having both mudguards powder coated dove grey. (£300 for the paint alone with some left over for another job) Now, the petrol tank is a job for the professional paint shop (Black and dove grey) and that will include the preparation and will cost me at least £300.(Just for the tank) The Black will need to match the other black bits and the Dove grey matched with the mudguards. It all adds to the cost.

I suggested that powder coating works out cheaper but when you just take bits at a time without adding it all up as you go, that could be wrong but I still like the finish, despite what George Cohen says.

Only thing to remember is make sure your fasteners go through the holes before assembly time. A couple of round files come in handy here. About £70 for a F/bed frame to prep and powder coat gloss black. Not sure how that compares with a paint shop?

Before anyone says; I know powder coat and stainless steel are not original finishes but theydon't stand out as wrong to most and the idea is that the machine will keep its looks for a lifetime and beyond. As long as we can get hold of Ethanol free petrol!

Well I have seen the results of power coating they ok as long as you do not knock it. its it cracks in time and the moisture gets in and it falls off with rust underneath And You cannot touch power coating up like you can Paint work . So give me good old fashioned Cellose Paint every time. yours anna j
