PPG paint codes for Post Office Red and Dove Grey?

Forums

Does anyone know the PPG paint codes for Post Office Red and Dove Grey for a 1960 99?

The paint codes listed, on the NOC site, are mostly 30 plus years old and will be very hard to track down at a High Street stockist. However, there are some spray paint specialists who will provide close matching colours in spray cans if not the actual original colour.

There are two other points that need a mention...........first we are now in the acrylic paint age and the finish can be quite different from that produced by the old Cellulose based mixes.

Secondly.....we also have the problems generated by fuel containing Ethanol. This is really wicked stuff and acts better than most banned paint strippers.

Well said Phil.

I have used RAL 1013 on my Dove Grey and Black 1960 99 and it really is a good match. I think it is perfect.

RAL 1013 (Oyster white / pearl white) is available in all forms, including powder coating, ideal for mudguards.

BS 538 is the standard code for Post Office Red. i believe this was a UK government approved colour from years back, I won't guarantee though that this will be a precise match for your Norton Dominator as back in 1960 paint was mixed by individuals - not computers- and shades could vary noticeably.Your local paint supplier will have colour matching cards so you can check this if this code matches to your sample.

Patrick, I'm in the US and they have no concept of the British color codes. If I can locate a paint card with a sample I can match that, but I'll also look into the Ford color. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Peter,

BS 381C was the official colour chart used in the UK in the sixties and RAL was the standard official European (German) colour system. You can still get colour charts for both these. They were completely independent of each other and I expect the US used another completely different system.

Monaco Red was a Ford colour used in the sixties/seventies- I think on UK built Ford Cortinas. So possibly you won't find this used on US built Fords. The only reference for this colour that I can now find shows BS as the Ford colour code but this was probably just Ford UK reference.

Anyway good luck with your repainting.

Patrick.
