Petrol?

Modern (rubbish) petrol, over a moth old. Can this be ascribed to running weaker than new stuff?

No guesses, maybes, or buts please. Any facts?

Use E0 while you can.

All marked up as E5,. so be careful.

Write to ESSO or ask the BP tanker driver.

E0 not available north of Teesside or SW.

That;s tyranny for you.     

The expensive alternative, is Anglo American racing fuel or Aspen, from the garden shop.

Thanks for that Ian, I am glad someone can read. Still no facts. BUT as  I have been using 'modern' fuel in several vehicles over the years, then I think the answer is NO. So there must be another reason for my quandary over a weak mixture.

I think Neil Wyatt's comments about E0 etc are fairly accurate. 

The last time I checked, Esso Supreme and Shell Super Plus are E0, but I do not believe BP offers it.

E0 becoming harder to find is inconvenient, but not tyranny.

 never had any trouble with modern petrol. The usual caveats about rubber componets excepted of course.

Shell has never had E0 fuel (well since ethanol was first used). They made a point of the ethanol content of their Super many years ago to boost octane ratings for high compression cars.

The last time I tested the stuff BP Ultimate and Esso Supreme were E0, despite the E5 labels, but this only applies to the 'middle ' of England.

Norman, thank you for these FACTS.

As a double graduate , being told I can't read and called a conspiracy theorist  is difficult to swallow, Is that really necessary in a discussion?

As well as Norman's submission some months ago, regarding BP Ultimate, I could have also added Avgas to E0 fuel but I was trying to be succcinct. Yes I know avgas contains anti freeze.

And yes, Shell went over to E5 soon after the Super Markets.(As Norman suggests)

To conclude. I can state that I have never suffered weak running using E0, despite when I bought it and that all of my tanks remain full, without addetives during layup. Indeed, my 16H(Tank half full)  has had the same fuel in the tank for more than 6 years with no need to top up due to low mileage and the brilliant'Easy Cap.'.(Starts well with the plug a nice colour after a run.

Let's see some humanity.on here. Questions but not insults please.

On 2 occasions I have had old petrol produce the effect you report.

The first one was with my Mercury. The petrol was some months old (over winter). The bike started apparently normally but of course needs lots of flooding from cold any way. The bike would only run with the choke on. It could be weakened off with the choke lever when running but needed full choke at low speeds.

The more recent event was with my Electra with the same cause and the same effect.

Read in an usually reliable source that storage life of E10 and E5 is 2 to 3 months in non sealed containers. What happens is that the more volatile components evaporates. More in hot weather. Also that ethanol absorbs water from air humidity.

From other sources read that fuel with more ethanol content runs leaner.

Scientifically correct, Mikael in my H O. Why I use only E0, especially when bikes are stored!

Then there is the Geo political element: Why?

The US of A use mostly corn while the UK uses mostly wheat. The UK is a net importer of Wheat so why not use Wheat  to help make food?  Better than eating ze bugs.

An old quote: :If you can 't discuss it then it's not science:.  Think 3rd wave Enlightenment, an age of science and reason.  This does not just apply to fuel..

I use Esso supreme from Dorset or Bristol if I can - filling up a Jerry can when I’m passing. I cannot comment accurately on the science or whether E5/10 causes engines to run lean but this fuel seems to keep, and my modern Tohatsu outboard wouldn’t tick over nicely on Tesco E10, I was about to look more deeply when I tried the Esso supreme - problem solved. 

A local motorcycle garage that sells Chinese 125s also had a similar problem and suggests that buyers stick to super unleaded.

My problems were with E5. I think anything with ethanol in it can be the cause of the problem.

My 650ss came with a Fuel Diamond in the petrol tank. One of the better "parts" fitted. That was 2013. No idea how old it was.

Started easily last year after 6 plus months idle. 

Am a fan. 

Replaced that Diamond with a new one and put the original one in a can of fuel. Seems to do what it says in the advert.

 There's a code in O B M to order them.

Reasonable price, worth a try.

Today’s petrol suffers from the “flat pint” syndrome ! So drink it quick or add something to keep it in good order, anything that enhances the long life of the fuel. I use ethanolmate mixed into the Shell E0 and it lasts however long I keep the fuel for.  My Dommi starts as runs well, even after months of inactivity..

There's an app for it...called PetrolPrices....free to register. You can "Save" your vehicle details to your "garage"- don't know if it works with older bikes, but I expect if its on the DVLC database you're fine. 

The Fuel feature is what its about though. It uses your Current Location, then will list as per your choices. For this, there are 3 tabs: Sort by; 2 options, price or distance.Fuel: Unleaded, diesel, Super unleaded, Premium Diesel. Brands: 22, including supermarkets.

It doesn't list any E0 obviously, but at least the Supers are there. You pays yer money...

Hi Chris - I go to Bridport the garage on the A35 roundabout (I need to double check its E0 as its a bit closer to Devon!) or at Yatton when we go to Wrington to visit Jen’s daughter.

Esso’s website states their Supreme will only remain as E0 until September.
