Old piston rings

Forums

Is it possible to use an old piston ring in a newly-honed cylinder if the ring is sufficiently unworn to be gapped correctly?

I ask because, embarrasingly, I broke a new oil control ring whilst filing the ends. But one of the existing oil rings had quite a small gap and could be re-fitted. Strangely, although I would have thought an oil ring with a tightish gap (0.008") would give a good seal, this was the cylinder that was smoking.

The bores are 68mm + 0.030" = 2.707" and I'm aiming for ring gaps of 0.010" i.e. between 3 and 4 thou per inch of bore.

The old compression rings had up to 0.025" gap, yet compression was very healthy.

The quick answer to your question is yes........as long as the old ring does not have any serious scoring on it.

Smoking can be caused by a variety of reasons and not just worn rings. However, some oil control piston rings, such as new single piece, are actually quite poor at doing what they are supposed to be doing. ie oil control.

I wondered if the original one-piece rings weren't very efficient, so I got some 3-piece ones with some difficulty, but the two sets have different radial width scraper rings, one set hardly touches the sides, the other set won't go in at all.

The new one-piece oil rings came from Cox & Turner, who said 3-piece ones aren't very good or particularly suited to air-cooled engines, which was news to me.

Hello Cox& Turners Are very good and they make piston rings to your size, and fitting and in a lot of cases are a lot cheaper too, than fitting GPM Or JP rings , the Next best thing is sets of rings from Cords Pistons and rings There phone Number - 081-998-9923 There Address Cords piston Rings Co.Ltd 8 Aintree Road Perivale, Greenford Middlesex -UB6 7LA

Hope this may help Yours Anna J
