Hi all firstly many thanks for having me in the club, I've been to several noc rallies and had the pleasure of talking to Peter Williams at a rally in Holland. What a wonderful chap,, I wasn't on a Norton but was invited by a friend with a 850,, I bought one a few years ago,, anyway after me making a short story long I wanted to find out all I can about my commando, its a 750 and on the log book says it was registered in Nov 1971, I easily found the full engine number but cannot find the frame number, the log book gives the same number as the engines last 6 digits can i still use the noc service to find the factory records for my bike, sorry if this has been asked a thousand times but I'm newish to this group,, many thanks in advance, Pete

There should be a red coloured alloy plate on the headstock, in 71 the engine number was also the frame number but only stamped on the plate and not directly onto the frame. There should be 4 holes for attaching the plate to the headstock if the plate is not there. You can buy new plates from Andover Norton, if you give them the number and the build date when ordering then they will stamp it for you and supply the drive screws to fit the 4 holes.

Many thanks for the info John, there is no plate or holes I presume they are filled with paint, I have bought a parts to restore the forks so I will fit a new plate when I tackle this job. Is it worth using the factory record search I don't mind paying if they can find the details from the engine number, thanks again, pete

Yes, you need the records search to get the date for the plate to be stamped. The holes are there but no doubt filled in when the plate was removed.
