Oil questions again

Forums

No doubt this has been asked load of times on this site but have just joined the club again after nearly 30 year break having just picked up a really nice Commando mk111.

Back then its was 20/50 GTX engine EP90 for the box and TQF for the clutch.

What are the oils of choice now for most people and does fully or semi synthetic get a look in?

hello No you need a good 20/50 Morris Oils and a Hypoly 80/90 gearbox oil EP90 dose not do the bronze bushes any good , and for the Clutch you need Lucas Primary chain oil specially made for clutches and lubing chains it help with cooling and helps to stop the clutch from slipping or dragging really good stuff and better than TQF at any time, yours Anna J

Hypoid EP 90 gear oils did in the past have a reputation for attacking bronze bushes. I gather that nowadays this is no longer the case. However, Morris Oils do a classic gear oil which you may wish to consider. I use Tractor Universal 10w-30 oil in my primary chaincases. Remarkably good value from any agricultural supplier. As for engine oils, if you have a cartridge oil filter, one of the high-detergent multigrades is possibly best. Bear in mind, the thinner the oil, the quicker it seeps past the oil pump gears to cause wet sumping. I would suggest a 20W-50 rather than a 15W-50.

I was thinking about Harley Davidson gear and clutch oil, this I use in my Buell S1. It is not a heavy oil, more like a straight 30 but the clutch does not slip and not many people seem to suffer from gearbox problems and if you think about it Harley engines produce mountains of torque and most are very heavy motorcycles two things that put a great strain on the gerabox. In fact they now are now producing a fully syn version.

Comments anyone??

I use 10W/60 fully synthetic from Fuchs (bought from Opie) in my Commando, the furring of the sump magnet that needed cleaning every oil change has stopped which is good enough for me to say wear rates have improved. One of these days I will try the 20W/60 but I have had an auto non return valve in the feedline for 20 odd years so no wet sumping and no leaks now I have repaired the fractured oil tank and plated over the bottom mount.
