The only definitive answer would be to trace the wires back and see where they go. What colours are they?

Since you mention a plug attached to the bike's wiring I take that this is not the standard accessory plug (which together with the relevant socket wired direct to the battery is part 06.2099).

A 12 vdc power takeoff socket mounted down close to the r/h heat sink was standard on at least 850 Commandos - my Mk 1A and Mk 3 both have them as fittedfrom the factory. Useful for battery charging or powering an inspection light.

Connect a meter to it to find out if or when it is live. I have a connector that I use for connection to the battery charge and when not charging to power Sat Nav. Also used to check battery condition and charging.

Never seen the 12 vdc socket shown on any Commando wiring diagram despite being a standard fitting on 850's. Modern replacement Commando wiring looms don't seem to have the socket circuitincluded either. Socket remains live all the time and the two female socket holes are different sizes to protect against wrong polarity connection - you therefore need the correct male plug with pins of different sizes.

Is this the socket and plug you refer to?

That's the one. Both my 850 Commandos had them fitted as standard from the factory.

Apology accepted!
But as I mentioned in my earlier post the only certain way to find out what's going on is to trace the wires back. Trial and error can lead to the release of quantities of Mr Lucas's smoke.
14.5 volts is fine for the charging circuit but should not go any higher.

+ 1 on all of that â 14.5…
+ 1 on all of that â 14.5v at the battery, with the engine running fast enough to produce the juice, is just what you want â I get the same, on both my MK2A 850 and on my Triumph Herald car. With everything off you want around 12.5v across the battery terminals for a healthy battery.
If your dangling connector shows 12.5 across its terminals with everything off, then it's someone's attempt to replicate the original accessory/charger connection. That was unavailable for many years, until fairly recently, so it wouldn't surprise me if someone's improvised.
And I hope you get well soon!

thank you for the charging info i did chase the wires, as you mentioned ,it was a power take off /charging plug luckily my solar charger has the same plug, but oddly both the wires on the other end connected to same terminal ?? now i have them on either terminal so i dont have to remove seat to charge battery which is nice ,as for getting better it may be a while just had 9 weeks chemo/rad all very nice not !!

What â both wires were connected to the same terminal?! It sounds like someone tried to improvise, but didn't have a clue what they were doing! That, or maybe it was a wrinkle to de-activate the connector without removing it, if that terminal was the earth terminal â? Good news and well done, anyway!
About the chemo/rad, and to paraphrase Peter Cook, there are many things that I'd have left out, if I'd been thinking about creating the universe â? Good luck with it and, of course, best wishes.

Guessing without a pic but maybe a previous owners addition for charging battery without taking side cover off, I had pig tail extensions included with a slow charger I bought.
