Odd carburation

Forums

My 99 with its single mono starts well , runs fine and ticks over nicely when warmed up, it does behave strangely for the first few minuits when cold when if exhibits all the symptons of rich running. I don't tickle the carb and the choke is opened immediatley after starting and the motor is kept running on the throttle where it hunts especially on small throttle openings. this clears after a little while ,Just the opposite behaviour I would exspect with a cold motor.

If it starts from cold with no tickle and no choke it implies either grossly over-rich on the pilot jet or a carb fuel level too high. Check that the carb float needle is seating properly and that the float itself is not sticking. Non-brass floats can expand with present-day fuels and catch in the float chamber cover. Check that your pilot jet is seated properly and that your pilot jet airway is clear. What size of pilot jet is fitted?

Hi Gordon, It needs full choke to start and a tickle would be usefull (but not possible on a DL with no tickler lever). It has a brass float and viton tip new needle and a new 20 pilot. The fuel level is lower than std to try to cure the problem. If it were simple I would have found it.I'm thinking poor float seating that floods when not running but seals with the vibration when running.I need to solder up a test rig to monitor fuel level before and after starting. Possible brass needle + brass float too heavy with current low density fuel.
