While I’m doing a bit of a refresh on my old 74 Mk2a I’ve noticed a couple of things that suggest it’s not quite the unmolested barn find I’d expected. I know it hasn’t been ridden for at least 15 years judging by the tax disc and MOT certificates. Overall it is but just two things jump out at me - one is the headlight, it is extremely clean inside but the wiring looks a bit “Chinese-ish” and the warning lights don’t quite fit. The other is the fuel tank, it is very clean inside with no rust apparent, but when I tipped it up to put a bit of jenolite on a rust patch I saw a part number. The gold lining is a bit scruffy too. Any thoughts? It fits and works so I’m not too bothered.

The way the threaded bosses for the mounting studs are secured to the sheet metal is a good indication whether the tank is genuine or or not. The mountings on genuine tanks, certainly the ones I have anyway, are very neat, whereas pattern tanks i have seen have quite crude brazed / welded bosses.

I’ve just been out to have a good look up underneath as the tank is yet refitted. The welds are superb, clearly done by someone who knew what to do, as are the welds along the seams.
