Mystery front mudguard, Commando or not?

Forums

Hello all,

Another puzzle for you, does anyone recognise this mudguard? It was in the boxes of parts for a Customers Commando project & to all intent & purpose it looks like a Commando front blade that has had holes drilled in the wrong place. It is stainless steel, the profile, shape & dimensions are exactly the same as a Commando item, except both ends have rolled finishing, rather than just the front, as is usually the case, there are no holes drilled for stays in either end & instead of having 6 holes on the top to rivet the bridge in place, it has 2 holes on either side which have bracing pieces spot welded into position on the inside of the guard, these look to be original to the guard, i.e. not a later addition, as I had first thought. It has been used, as there are witness marks where a mounting has been fitted & a slight scuff on the front corner/edge

My original plan was to make a custom bridge that would utilise the mounting holes already there & then drill the holes to fit the stays but I thought before I do this, Iâd see if anyone recognised it & needed it as it is. I know the âSSâ models didnât have stays fitted as the guard was mounted high off the wheel MX style but not sure what kind of mounting it had, could this be an âSSâ item? Or could it be from one of the hybrid models? Or is it just an after market generic copy for specials builders etc?

As I said, itâs a reasonably simple job to modify it & utilise it but Iâm just curious as to itâs origins, itâs almost too much like a Commando front guard not to be one, but the mounting is completely different. I wouldnât want to start drilling & modifying it & then find Iâve butchered something as rare as henâs teethblush

Regards, Tim
