Model 99 (57) tyres

Forums

I have been told that 90/90 Avon roadrider tyres will not clear the front mudguard stays on my Dommi. Is this so? Am I stuck with Avon SM ribbed 3 x 19s?

No Tim, it will clear the stays but not the original bridge.

What I did was to use the much thinner Stainless bridge and job sorted.

The Speedmaster 3.00x19 isn't a bad tyre. I fitted one to my 99 when the Roadrider proved too tight. The Roadrider is replacing the Cheng Shin on my BSA so it wasn't a wasted purchase.

Perfect Gordon, just had to drill a couple of new holes in the top of the bridge. But better than drilling the mudguard.

Are there different 'standard' bridges for the early narrower forks? Perhaps one for the blade type guards, and one for the valanced guards? My 90/90 just fits on 1963 bike but the guard looks like a home made job (by PO) to me.And is the s/s bridge from the usual suppliers?ThanksDavid

Mine was the standard 1960 99 set up and the side of the Avon 90/90 tyre just caught on the bridge. That was in bare metal and powder coating would have made it worse.

Hi, Where did you get the bridge? Is there any benefit in fitting the road rider over the SM. I Have never liked the SM tyres & preferred the k70s, TT100s & roadrunners as were.

Perhaps the compound is better than it was in the 1970's?

I hope so. Although a proper fit for the purists, I always found the SM to be the vilest of tyres.

Funny old things, tyres. My favourite was always the Avon Roadrunner 3.60x19 for the front. The Avon Speedmasters do have modern rubber these days and in my experience are OK. Whereas some swear by Dunlop K70s I consider them to be dreadful - poor grip wet or dry and a very short life. I suppose it all depends on how you ride and whatyou feel happy with. Just keep wearing them out!

Hi.

My 1960 wideline ES2 run roadriders front and rear. I do seem to remember a bit of judicious beating on the (original) bridge near the top of the forkleg indents where the tyre rubbed - but it can be done- also watch out for the stay bolts on the mudguard. I also prefer Avons. Tyre pressure for the front needs to be upped to ~32psi.

Regards,

Ian.

Nice single Ian, I find the new Avon's are excellent. As for the stainless bridge, I bought it from Norvil. As said, it just needed new holes in the top to suit the slimline mudguard.
